Interview Reel and Blog Post Assignment

Caption:

A Conversation with Dr. Daniel Carter! Dr. Daniel Carter, a DMI professor at Texas
State for nearly 7 years, sat down with
students from the School of Journalism to
share his insights on digital media education and innovation.

Some key takeaways from the discussion: It’s not about the tools you use, but the
thought process behind them. Universities often teach tricks in DMI instead of slowing down to focus on core concepts. He wishes students were taught the “building
blocks” to encourage more creativity.

Being a professor is a unique blend of
teaching and research, making the job both
challenging and rewarding. Thank you, Dr. Carter, for sharing your
knowledge and passion with our students! 👏

Blog Post

Overview

  • For our project, our team interviewed Dr. Daniel Carter to capture and communicate the impact the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) has had through an Instagram Reel and a blog post.

Deliverables

  • Instagram Reel: Edited interview highlights with strong visuals and clear audio
  • Blog Post: Written article based on the interview transcript

Team Roles

  • Interviewer 1: Keilani De Luna
  • Interviewer 2: Jerry Gonzalez
  • Photo Content: Aiden Fitzpatrick
  • Video Content: Juan Emanuel
  • Overseer: Ethan Ratliff
  • Blog Writer: Elise Kadison (me)

My Contribution

  • I wrote the blog post using the transcript generated from our recorded audio. My job was to take raw interview responses and turn them into a structured narrative that was clear, readable, and accurate to Dr. Carter’s message. I also collaborated with the team on the final caption and hashtags to align the Reel with the project’s purpose and audience.

Process

  • 1) Before filming, we:
    • Assigned roles to keep production organized
    • Emailed Dr. Carter to coordinate scheduling
    • Wrote interview questions and color-coded them so each interviewer knew their set
    • Planned how the interview would be filmed and what shots we needed
    • Created a supply list to determine who would bring what equipment
  • 2) During the interview, we set up:
    • Camera and lighting
    • Microphones and audio recorders to protect sound quality
    • Photos of Dr. Carter for the reel thumbnail and supporting visuals
  • 3) After filming:
    • We shared all content internally so everyone had access
    • Juan and Aiden edited the Reel together using the strongest clips
    • I wrote the blog post from the audio transcript
    • As a group, we finalized the caption and hashtags for publishing

Skills Demonstrated

  • Content repurposing: one interview made into two formats (short-form and long-form)
  • Production workflow: planning, role assignment, scheduling, and equipment setup
  • Audio quality control: capturing clean sound for professional results
  • Storytelling and writing: turning transcript material into a structured blog narrative
  • Collaboration: coordinated handoffs, shared assets, and joint publishing decisions
